Whitman County Jail Overview
Whitman County Jail is operated by the Whitman County Sheriff's Office at 411 N Mill Street in Colfax. It is the only detention facility identified in the Whitman County facility map for this build. The jail serves as the county's local booking, pretrial detention, short-sentence, work-release, and hold facility. Pullman and other city agencies route custody questions to the county jail rather than publishing a separate city jail roster.
The facility houses all levels of offenders before conviction, including serious felony arrests, gross misdemeanors, misdemeanors, warrants, and court holds. After conviction, Whitman County keeps only people sentenced to one year or less. A sentence longer than one year moves the person to state prison custody, so a later lookup should use WA DOC rather than the county roster. The public roster also showed DOC holds, out-of-county warrants, and federal hold language during research, which means some people are physically in the jail for another legal authority.
Whitman County Jail Population
Whitman County Jail was built in 1984. The county's Jail Statistics page says bed space increased to 62 in 2014 and that temporary bunks can be added if needed. The same county source says the population is usually about 32 to 38 on most days and can swell over 50 many times during the year. The roster site's About Us page gives a similar typical count of about 30 to 35.

Look Up Whitman County Jail Inmates
The correct online lookup for Whitman County Jail is the live inmate listing. It is maintained through Lobo Public Safety Software, requires no login, and states that it updates about every 10 minutes. The roster is a sortable list instead of a form. It does not have a text search box, submit button, account login, export, or pagination in the captured public view.
- Open the inmate listing from the jail roster site or from the county Who's in Jail? page.
- Sort by inmate name, booking date, release date, age at arrest, or pre-sentence class.
- Read the visible roster entry for booking number, booked date, alleged offenses, bond or hold, class, and release date when shown.
- Compare booking numbers if the same person appears more than once, since the roster says separate causes can create separate listings.
- Call Whitman County Jail at 509-397-5585 when the custody, charge, or bail question is urgent.
The booking-date roster source is useful when a visitor is checking a recent arrest rather than browsing by name.
Whitman County Jail Contact
Use the jail number for custody and inmate information. The county's Who's in Jail page says an officer can tell whether a person is in jail, the charges, and the amount of bail. The jail does not deliver personal messages to inmates and cannot transfer calls to inmates. Contact is handled through letters, visits, and inmate phone systems.

Mail must be sent to the inmate at the jail address. The county says mail brought during a visit is not accepted. Prohibited mail includes drugs, food or candy, ink pens, sexually explicit materials, stickers, and tobacco. Whitman County Jail Booking
Booking creates the public jail roster entry. The jail orientation says an arrested person has a chance to make a phone call during booking and should ask for needed phone numbers before leaving booking. The person goes through identification, property handling, medical authorization or screening, and jail rules. The inmate manual is available in each unit and on the kiosk, and breaking written rules can lead to lockdown.
First court review connects booking to the court record. Superior Court first appearances normally occur at 3 pm Monday through Thursday and 10:30 am Friday. District Court first appearances usually occur at 1 pm Monday and Tuesday, 3 pm Wednesday, and 1 pm Thursday and Friday. Bond can be automatic for some misdemeanors, but felony and domestic violence cases are not bondable until judicial review of the PC Booking Sheet.
Whitman County Jail Programs
Whitman County Jail offers work release, school release, and community service opportunities. Entry is not automatic. The research says a person must have good behavior, be drug free, and submit the required work-release application packet. Paid work needs an employment supplement, and driving or riding to work requires a transportation supplement.
- Work release: approved employment or school release for eligible inmates.
- Community service: in-house cleaning, mopping, painting, sweeping, and outside road crews.
- Religious access: county jail materials say inmates are offered the opportunity to worship.
- Medical care: inmates can see a jail doctor weekly for medical issues and prescriptions.
- PREA reporting: the jail orientation says sexual assault reports are investigated and confidential reporting is allowed.
Whitman County Jail Records Law
The jail roster is public jail-register information under RCW 70.48.100. That statute makes the register open to the public, but it also says records of a person confined in jail are confidential except for specific statutory disclosures. For a jail record not shown online, use the Whitman County public records request process and describe the record by name, date, booking number, and department when known.
Inspection is free, standard copies are listed at $0.15 per page on the county form, and a response must be taken within five business days. Court records are different. Whitman County says chapter 42.56 RCW is not the route for court documents, so Superior Court, District Court, and court search portals should be used for charges and case copies.
Note: Call 509-397-5585 before visiting, sending funds, or relying on a roster entry for a time-sensitive custody decision.
